April 1: On This Day in Science Fiction History

Though she only appeared sparingly in Star Trek's first televised season, Grace Lee Whitney is fondly remembered by Trek enthusiasts as a member of the starship's crew.  She reprised the role of Janice Rand in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and even made an appearance on Star Trek: Voyager for good measure.  Definitely a fan favorite on the convention circuit, Whitney was born on this day in 1930.…

March 31: On This Day in Science Fiction History

I can still remember seeing The Matrix in theatres.  Although it premiered on this day back in 1999, I know that I didn't rush out to the movies to see it right away.  After all, it starred Keanu Reeves, so I figured it was probably going to end up being as tepid as Johnny Mnemonic was.  In fact, I remember reading one review that even asked the question as to why Reeves would've chosen to star in The Matrix since its plot summary appeared to be identical to Mnemonic!  What a difference a filmmaker with a vision makes, eh?…

March 30: On This Day In Science Fiction History

Greetings, fellow Star Trek enthusiasts, and here's what I was able to find out about March 30's place in Science Fiction History!  Today marks the birthday of Star Trek VOYAGER's li'l Borg/child played by actress Marley McClean.

Also earning a nasty, hissing mention is Paul Reiser who played the nefarious "Burke" from James Cameron's visit to the ALIEN universe in…

March 29: On This Day in Science Fiction History

When STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION premiered, I'm not entirely sure fans were all that enamored with the character of ship's counselor Deanna Troi.  It wasn't that she wasn't interesting and lovely as portrayed by series regular Marina Sirtis -- rather, it's that the writers didn't quite know what to make of her.  Consequently, she ended up half the time voicing things everyone already knew, and as for the other half?  She just sat there looking beautiful ... which Marina is certainly good at!

Sirtis was born on this day in 1955.…

Roger Nygard is a veteran Hollywood editor / writer / producer who helped Denise Crosby throughout the process of bringing both Trekkies and Trekkies 2 to bold cinematic life.  Nygard was born on this day in 1962.

On this day in 1964, Doctor Who aired "Mighty Kublai Khan" as part of its first season.  Here's…

March 27: On This Day In Science Fiction History

As I've mentioned before, I just didn't get into Firefly or its spinoff theatrical attempt Serenity.  It isn't that I didn't see merit in the characters and situations; rather it just never struck a chord with me as anything all that interesting.  In many ways, it felt an awful lot like Starhunter but with vastly better scripts.  Meh.  In any event, I did appreciate the performances, of which Nathan Fillion sure turned in a doozy.  Fillion -- always a fan favorite -- was born on this day in 1971.…
