January 30: On This Day In Science Fiction History

Christian Bale's reputation took a bit of a drubbing when he appeared as the legendary John Connor in the poorly-reviewed Terminator Salvation, but, for all the beating it took, I enjoyed the film well enough.  I thought Bale's performance as the leader of Earth's salvation had just the right amount of misplaced sanctimony and bravado to make it perfectly believable and perfectly acceptable given the overall tone of the film.  Bale was born on this day in 1974.…

On this day in history from 2012, actor Avery Brooks -- better known to Trek enthusiasts as Captain Benjamin Sisko -- was arrested for a DUI in Wilton, Connecticut, after failing a sobriety test.  Captain, say it isn't so!

January 28: On This Day In Science Fiction History

The first season finale of Farscape -- titled "Family Ties" -- aired on this day back in 2000, and it was really a game-changer of an episode: the crew of Moya was facing certain death from the fast approaching Peacekeepers, and the final scenes seemed to almost spell certain doom for so many characters.  Ah, there's nothing better than great sci-fi television, is there?…

January 27: On This Day In Science Fiction History

It's one thing to get a guest starring role in Star Trek; it's another thing to get an opportunity to play one of the program's mythological figures.  That's what veteran actor James Cromwell got to do in Star Trek: First Contact, long revered to be the best of the TNG movies.  Cromwell played Zephram Cochrane, the man responsible for not only inventing warp drive but also -- in doing so -- setting Earth on a path toward inclusion within the greater galactic community.

Cromwell was born on this day in 1940.…

January 26: On This Day In Science Fiction History

Despite it being a bad idea, the crew of the Enterprise directly and indirectly 'tinkered' in Earth's past on more than one occasion, but none was quite as memorable and downright fun as first season's "Tomorrow Is Yesterday."  This Star Trek hour saw the crew of the Enterprise thrown back to the year 1969 and being identified as a UFO, and it first aired on this day in 1967.…

January 25: On This Day In Science Fiction History

On Syfy's Defiance, she runs a brothel.  Pardon my obvious sexism, but I'm guessing it's a very successful brothel.  Mia Kirshner cut her acting teeth in a whole slew of mostly forgettable minor roles, but it was her wicked transformation as the terrorist-for-hire in Fox TV's 24 program that propelled her career into new heights.  With her plum appearance as a regular on Defiance, she's finally reaping the benefits of her perseverance.  Ms. Kirschner was born on this day back in 1975.…
