April 24: On This Day In Science Fiction History

Legendary director Richard Donner celebrates his birthday today.  Back in the 70's, Donner was tapped to bring Superman - The Movie to the big screen; and the ambitious project was initially conceived as a two-part film, with the events of the first picture setting up what was to follow in Superman II.  However -- as can happen in Hollywood -- there was some creative differences, and much of what Donner had planned for the sequel ended up being re-envisioned by director Richard Lester.  After decades, WB finally agreed to a limited home video release of Superman II - The Richard Donner Cut, pleasing most fans, but alas what…

April 23: On This Day In Science Fiction History

Those of us old school sci-fi fans have fond memories of Lee Majors as The Six Million Dollar Man.  An astronaut injured in the crash of an experimental craft, Steve Austin was alive.  Barely alive.  They rebuilt him.  They made him better.  Stronger.  Faster.  Once made into that $6M man, he used his impressive bionics to save the day, and Majors was born on this day in 1939.…

April 22: On This Day In Science Fiction History

In the 1980's nobody but nobody played "girl-next-door-goodness" like Catherine Mary Stewart.  She brought her immeasurable charm to such sleeper hits as The Last Starfighter, and her pluckiness elevated even such forgettable fare as Night of the Comet.  She's continued to work off and on over the years, but unfortunately she's never found the kind of fanboy acclaim she experienced during her early career.

Stewart was born on this day in 1959.…

April 21: On This Day In Science Fiction History

The prissy Brit James McAvoy may not think much of America or Americans, but he's still happy to appear as part of an American franchise as powerful as the X-Men.  He headlined X-Men: First Class, a rowdy 60's inspired origins film for Charles Xavier and his band of mutant strongmen (and strongwomen!).  Mr. McAvoy was born on this day back in 1979.

I know…

Most folks around these parts know him as Captain Hikaru Sulu, but to everyone else he's nothing more than good ol' George Takei.  He's been a lovable goodwill ambassador for so many years that he's been associated to our beloved franchise, and I'm told he maintains a wonderfully comic presence on Facebook.  Whatever you may call him, just don't call him 'Shorty'!  Takei was born on this day back in 1937.…
