A lot of people bash on Nelix but his importance to the crew was very valuable. Let’s share our thoughts and reasons why his contabutions to the crew, ship and series were so important. I will start with his two obvious duties:

Nelix was an important person because he knew a little about everything ( Which wasn't much ) BUT when it matter he knew what was needed and what to do about it, not to mention he was a great babysitter, and the children loved him because he was trustable
i always loved neelix, in fact when he left i cried. and one of my favorite/more memorable scenes was when Tuvok danced for him. i felt that he reached out to people and if you can make a vulcan dance then you are the coolest guy in the universe.
When the producers of the Voyager series first made the show, Nelix was supposed to be the 'focus character'. The Doctor ended up taking his place, due to the fans' letters.
