So what did you guys and gals think of the new movie ST XI?

For me personally I thought it was great. Even though there was some parts I didn't like (little knick picking) overall I thought it was good. Although I wished nero could of been a little more bad ass. I think JJ did a great job and Orci and kurtzman did a great job of writing it. I'm just a huge fan and i'm glad they gave it another chance. Cause every since nemisis and enterprise not doing well, I thought it was over for a long time.

I would give it a C. The actors and actresses were good but given bad direction. JJ Abrams should be fired!!!. The special effects were well done. The Parallell universe type story was rediculous. Not much of a homage to the characters I've loved for over 40 years. I'm dissappointed because I was hoping for something special. Many people say that they really loved this movie. Must be Star Trek starvation. I could see right through it for what is was. JJ's promise for paramount a paycheck. Very sad.
Peace and long life to all.

Yes, you can "see right through it". This new movies ripped-off so many other sci-fi scenes it was sad. JJ Abrams really miscalculated the intelligence of the original Trek fan. He thinks we can be impressed with big sound, lots of explosions and titillating references of Kirk (and Spocks and Uhura's) libido. The movie was lousy. D-
I'd rather watch ST:E reruns or Futurama the cartoon.

I didn't like the whole movie being set in the alternate reality either. I felt like I wasn't watching the "real" ST. I did like Enterprise's interior, and the ship the cadets were on en route to the Enterprise ... I like that the windows weren't spotless. I don't mind the idea of an alternate reality, but not for the whole thing to be there. I hope they won't do that again.

The sequel is in the works with this same team, etc. This is where Star Trek will be for now on.. at least for a while.

It was a very good film. Great character moments, emotional scenes, and had heart! Just what Star Trek has needed in a long time.

I thought about it and now we have a up to date trek that can be explored anew we needed bad lets face it theres only so much remastering you can do.
I think everyone should stop comparing it and let let it take you on the ride that is Star Trek.

Man I agree with you 100%. We do need to stop comparing to the old ones. Of course it's not the same. Let's move forward to new and different ideas and not backwards.

I'd have to disagree. Those of us who didn't like the new movie are comparing the old to the new because the new movie is based on old (now iconic) characters. So the movie should be what we want. Not what some Director tells us we have to accept.
Accepting this movie just to be "politically correct" and all nicey and just go along with it, is the same attitude that got this country into the economic mess we are into today. Apathy.

"Well, it's not exactly what we want, but someone else is doing it so I'll just go along with the herd."

That one sentence can be applied to everything in a civilized society.

If you like something support it. If you don't like something, speak up, boycott it. As we're all doing here.

EXACTLY!!! I don't think it was meant as a complete restart to Star Trek but as a new possibilty. After all isn't that what Star Trek is all about: Possibilties? I for one am taking this trip to the end of the line and enjoy the scenery along the way.

There was so much room to be creative, though. It wasn't necessary to give us an alternate-reality ST. I would've loved to've seen the beginnings of the friendships and the development of Kirk from the bookish, studious cadet to the adventurer he became. Etc. I wanted the "real" characters, not some view of them from another reality.

He still was in the new film...

They are all still the same characters. Kirk's background was a little different thanks to his father being killed. Everyone else seemed to be pretty well in line.

They are not the same characters. Would Spock as we know him have ever gotten involved with Uhura ? emphatically no! As a matter of fact he consistently dodged this sort of thing with nurse Chapel in TOS. Would Spock as we know him in the original series have jettisoned an unruly crew member onto a mostly deserted planet to be rid of him ? I think not. I think he would have slapped him in the brig and brought him up on charges when the opportunity arose. These are not the same characters. These are re-imaginings of the characters to make the franchise popular to a wider audiance in order to make more profit off the franchise.
