So what did you guys and gals think of the new movie ST XI?

For me personally I thought it was great. Even though there was some parts I didn't like (little knick picking) overall I thought it was good. Although I wished nero could of been a little more bad ass. I think JJ did a great job and Orci and kurtzman did a great job of writing it. I'm just a huge fan and i'm glad they gave it another chance. Cause every since nemisis and enterprise not doing well, I thought it was over for a long time.

Well, this movie wasn't supposed to be like every other ST. They are all different and shouldn't be expected to be the same. Even if it was based of the original. Though the director is 'StarWars boy' the movie was pretty decent, and the fact that he is a StarWars fan should be a happy thought. That means he put more into the movie than just the ST expectations.
Who's to say that the movie wasn't supposed to be set in an alternate universe? That part made it much more modern and gave the movie a chance for more ideas for things that have never been tried before, or would you have preferred to see the same thing over and over and over again? I thought it was a fun idea for an alternate universe. It opens many doors for change and a chance to branch off for a different ST series or a a collection of StarTrek movies.
The movie wasn't the best, but it was well made, and a lot of thought was put into it. Kudos to JJ.

I loved it so much, It made me a trekkie. I started watching the TOS for the first time cause of the movie. And I was A STAR WARS FANBOY. I just posted a blog of my review of it. If anyone is interested in my take, and I would love to hear yours, even if its negative, I like to see what the old school fans think of it.

Omg what was wrong with Nemesis or Enterprise? I simply cannot see what other people complain about, what was wrong with them? Now I did have a problem with the new trek movie, I'll say it was good I really enjoyed it, but the changes of Spocks mom dying, the planet Vulcan being destroyed, the way a star ship looks in the inside, it looks like a factory. I know it was a new approach, but it simply wasn't what I expected, the new approach I did not like. I will enjoy it because it is star trek, but consider it as an add on to the canon not an all together. Like the 5 shows and the 9 movies those will be my ultimate favorites, I really witch they would start a new trek show, but not based on the movie !
Let me know what you guys think of my comments, I hope they weren't harsh, remember the movie was great but not what I feel that should have been, they could have made it exactly the same with a different story line without those changes I mentioned before, but it's ok I think J J was consorting with Romulans !!!!!! LOL

Hi,
I didn't like this movie. I think is not a good movie because the plot is very very very bad. Oh, really, It has a lot of black holes; and a movie with a bad plot is not good movie. Fun? Ok, but good? the plot is the most importante thing in a movie.
This movie has not it. It's the worst trek plot I have seen...
And, I'm sorry, but I think, this film is not STAR TREK, is antiStar Trek...Kirk is a cheater and arrogant boy...is this Roddenberry Star Trek? Uhura is sweet and passive baby...is this Roddenberry Star Trek? Scottie is a mad hooligan who speaks in slang...is this Roddenberry Star Trek? Spock is a quick tempered fellow, is this Roddenberry Star Trek?
Sulu is the typical jap with katana (but Cho is KOREAN...) is this Roddenberry Star Trek? . Too much testosterone, few grey cells
There is not chain of command. Kirk: From cadet to captain of the flagship in 24 hours...It's ludicrous.
JJ Abrams is THE Antiroddemberry. Abrams' philosophy is 'don't think about it: see and enjoy', Roddenberry's philosophy: 'see, enjoy and think about it' .ST 2009 is a popcorn movie for teenagers. And, Ronald D. Moore said:
" I think you can't subsit on a diet of pop corn. Especially STAR TREK needs to be about more than that. ".
With JJ Abrams is not.

I hated the film, and JJ Abrams should be beheaded with a bat'leth for this waste of an opportunity. If the fans want Kirk and co. Done right, check out Star Trek Phase II

I never considered myself a hardcore Trekkie. Though, I grew up watching TNG faithfully every week (Patrick Stewart basically jump-started my puberty) and DS9 to a lesser degree.
I caught a few episodes of TOS (The Cage was always on for some reason).

That said, I loved the new film. I think too many of you guys are falling into this trap. You have to judge the movie by itself, without all the baggage you bring to it. Judge it as a completely new story based on those characters you loved.

The keyword here is based. Which means exacting adherence to canon and/or the ideals you have in mind are unrealistic expectations. ...And still, it surpassed so, many of them.

You grow with the characters, get to know who they are, why they are, fret for them on their journey, and by the end you believe them as a crew.

Mission accomplished.

I should point out that:

1. This film was intended for all audiences, not just self-proclaimed fans of the series. With hundreds of episodes, five series and ten movies, it got to the point where people who didn't know the show were becoming put off or alienated by the franchise. The declining audience numbers for Star Trek Nemesis and Enterprise made this quite clear. A way had to be found to bring all the modern audiences back into the fold, and that's why they came up with going back to the origins of "how Kirk and Spock became Kirk and Spock" by way of the alternate timeline. I had a lot more non-Trek friends who really enjoyed this movie.

2. The plot of the entire movie hinges on Leonard Nimoy/Spock Prime's participation. If you consider that Nimoy is not just the original actor who played Spock, but has also written, directed and produced some of the TOS-era films, and like Shatner, "I don't just do cameos" (hence his omission from Star Trek Generations) - his willingness to do this film is a seal of approval which, for me, counts for something. If Mr Nimoy himself can see the virtue of this film and put on his "Spock's ears" one more time, surely those who are spitting hatred at the film can at least try to do the same. (In the DVD bonus material, we see Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig visiting the set and giving their blessing to the film.)

Fans complained when Spock died in Star Trek II; they complained when the Enterprise was destroyed in III; they complained when Kirk died (twice) in ST Generations. The fact is, given the diversity of the fans, you will never have something which will satisfy everyone, so it's up to the individual to find something to enjoy and take away from the show. If the so-called classic fans find so much to dislike with this, there's now a whole lot of new audiences out there who have been reintroduced to classic Trek because of this film.

While the movie may not have been what many of us expected, I'd have to agree with Captain Breawyn Lem's last comment.

Before seeing this movie, I knew virtually nothing of Star Trek, and didn't think I'd ever like Trek. After seeing it, I'm practically obsessed. I also have a few friends who have been affected in the same way. The best part... By putting out a movie like this, it attracted young fans. I'm 16, and have friends who range between 12 and 19 who were "converted" by this movie. Guess what? I believe this movie resurrected Trek by providing something for today's age. Suddenly, more people are watching the rest of Trek, from TOS to Enterprise. Therefore, I have reason to believe that it was a great movie.

I am sometimes surprised by audiences who complain about "remakes". It is true, to a point, that Hollywood loves remakes and sequels because it simply allows them to tap into an already-existing fan base, and many times the sequels are unfortunately an inferior derivative of the original show.

Looking at it from a different perspective, though, I also think that telling and re-telling and re-inventing folklore and stories has always intrinsically been part of our culture of storytelling, going back all the way to the origins of civilization and the invention of writing. Look at how many versions of Robin Hood have been made as TV series and films, or all the different ways the plays of Shakespeare have been re-imagined as operas and ballets and even films (Kurosawa's "Ran" set in medieval Japan as an allegory of "King Lear", for instance.)

If you look at it that way, each Star Trek series and film is, for better or worse, merely an extension of that storytelling which began with the original series in the 60s. The Next Generation, in its way, reflected many of the values and sensibilities of the 80s (having a therapist located not only on the bridge, but seated next to the captain!), and so on.

I think audiences in each era/generation will naturally cling most to the particular shows which resonate the most with them: thus you have TOS diehards who reject every other series as inferior spin-offs, or late-generation Voyager fans for whom TOS is long-winded and talky, and the visual effects cheap and amateurish. I suppose to view one's loyalty as a zero-sum game - that is, "if I enjoy one series, I must dislike another series" - is rather myopic, but what can you do?
