For me personally I thought it was great. Even though there was some parts I didn't like (little knick picking) overall I thought it was good. Although I wished nero could of been a little more bad ass. I think JJ did a great job and Orci and kurtzman did a great job of writing it. I'm just a huge fan and i'm glad they gave it another chance. Cause every since nemisis and enterprise not doing well, I thought it was over for a long time.
I hear what your saying, But in the end it has to make money. Unless ST fans don't care to have another series or movie's again. On a tv show called attack of the show they interviewed nemoy and he stated that years ago roddenberry stated that he would like for someone to take star trek with new ideas and what not (can't remember exactly what he stated but you get the idea) Nemoy said he enjoyed the movie (of course he could of been BSing to promote the movie).
You have to think this is a movie so it needs to be some what fast paced and keep the audiences attention. It can't be like a tv series where there can be more character based development. I do agree with some things like spock and uhuras kissing scene (odd) and a few other things.
But in the end for me I am willing to accept changes so that I can have ST for years to come. It would suck if this was the last ST movie or series ever.
"That being said. Why could they not have come up with something origional in the star trek universe,"
Come up with something original? Or come up with something in the original Star Trek universe?
"or at least read the complete compediums so they would know what they should have done."
Did you mean Compendiums? Not sure what you mean.
"This movie in my opinion was way one sided and not very respectful to the origional craftsmen of star trek (Roddenberry, DC Fontana, Gene Coon). Those were story tellers."
DC and Coon? Yes. Roddenberry? Nope.
"This movie was pure flash"
Can't be pure flash if all aspects of the story is being debated in to great detail.
Gene Rodenberry was a brilliant man with brilliant ideas. He also had the craft of bringing together individuals more capable than himself to putting things down for people to understand.
Compendiums. Excuse me. My spelling is not that good.
Come up with something origional in the time of Kirk and Spock is what I meant. That to me was the most exciting time in star trek TV history. But the origional cast is still alive on DVD. Why try to remake them when it is impossible to do so.
I saw no great detail in this film. Just flash.
"Gene Rodenberry was a brilliant man with brilliant ideas. He also had the craft of bringing together individuals more capable than himself to putting things down for people to understand."
Read Robert Justman's book, you'll see how "brilliant" he was... or wasn't.
Gene Rodenberry was a world war II bomber pilot, a police officer, wrote numerous scrips for numerous TV pilots. He also cleverly got past the tight 1960s censors with stories about the era's problems. He recognized talented people, (Deforrest Kelley, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, ect). He work on a budget at Desilu that was near impossible. Fuck Robert Justman and his jealousy. Books are opinionated just like history reports by the losers.
As far as watching the movie, my wife and I watched all 2hrs and 9 mins of it. We just didn't feel it worked.
You and I have vastly different opinions, and no matter what I say you're going to disagree. But that's fine. That is what this discussion is all about.
Peace and long life,
Gary T
I agree with you about there being detail in the movie, I just had a hard time seeing it due to the amount of "flash" in my eyes. One bit of detail I did appreciate though. It was in a Scotty scene. There was something about Archer's beagle having been used as a test subject. I was pleased to hear that Archer was at least mentioned in the story.
As for Roddenberry, let's not forget that he was, and always will be the Great Bird of the Galaxy!
It started well ... Kirk's father's impending death during the birth of his son, Kirk being raised by presumably solo mother with an abusive boyfriend (unless his threat to beat Kirk was empty) ... it went downhill from there, intellectually. I thought it was a good movie (well-paced for sure), but as someone else pointed out, should've been entitled something else. It wasn't a Trek movie for me. I agree with you that it was too much flash.
Ok....
1. Use spell check. It's FREE! Stop crying about your pathetic spelling abilities. Maybe you should have studied in school instead of sleeping. You'll never make in in the real outer space world, let alone Star Trek.
2. EVERYONE knew that a change was coming to Star Trek. As others already said, why keep redoing the same thing? If you can't handle change, climb back under your beds. The one thing that humaity hates, is change. Unfortunately, everythng changes. You change your clothes. You change your furniture arrangement. If you can't open up your mind to an alternate change, go back home to Ferengi.
3. It will be amazing to see what happens with Klingons, Kahn, Romulans and the Borg! I, for one hope they keep this alternate timeline going. If they don't, I'm sure the Vulcans will find a way to undo the damage.
4. If you don't like it, go cry in your Romulan Ale. You waste the air we all need to breathe and enjoy Trek!
I guess I"m just a die-hard origional series guy that does not like the history molded to me in a disrespectful way.
Just my opinion. I still think the movie was made for people just out of puberty!
As far as exploring characters in new ways? Re-making up an established history is not exploration, it is non creative crap. Don't do this with our star trek.
And this movie was all one-sided. 85% action and noise, 15% thought. A gamer's heaven. But bad Star Trek. And I can tell by your T'Pring comments and the episode examples that you and I have extremely different opinions on Spock. But that's OK. That's why we are discussing the issue here.
Movies are made for different reasons and to attract different followers. I've never been a "I'll take whatever ya got person". I am picky about my passions and want them done to perfection. I am passionate about the origional star trek, and I will not settle for this rediculous portrayal of what was once a great idea.
Peace and long life to all,
Yes I thought it would not be out until later as well. But Extra-Vision, a video rental store (we have in Ireland) have it on sale now. I went in there yesterday (Saturday) and saw it, so, I bought it, lol.
They are also giving it away free if you...
