Garak! My favorite Star Trek character of all time! He is the man. So complex, so devious.

My favorite DS9 character would have to be Chief Miles O'Brien. His expertise with all the technical systems allows him to do almost anything. The character also has so many different facets to him. There is his friendship with Dr. Julian Bashir and the tension between that relationship and his relationship with his wife. He serves as a sort of mentor to Jake. He displays uneasiness around Odo and also around Major Kira, you can tell he wants to stay on their good sides. And then he shows a comical frustration around Worf and Quark. There are thousands of story lines that can develop from these relationships. And of course, you have the writers who pick on O'Brien so much! lol. It just seems there's always something really bad happening to O'Brien. You can't help but feel for him. So, Cheif O'Brien gets my vote. He who was one of the "little people" (as Q would say) on TNG, finally gets his break and shines in DS9!

I would have to say that this is challenging to narrow to just one choice. If forced to select, Gul Dukat tops my list. He is so nefarious, aweful, and dispicable that I cringe just seeing him sometimes. Mark Alaimo's performance was truly amazing and I'd daresay was easily the equal of any other actor from the universe of Trek. Being classically trained and posessing an extensive Shakespearian repertoire, he was able to act through the prosthetics and bulky costume so as to give the character true depth and dynamism.

My second choice would definitely be Chief O'Brien. His character was brilliantly molded into the "everyman" on DS9. On TNG he was simply a background minor reccurring character, but through some great writing and humor, he became the man any of us might like to have keeping our own ship going. His relationship with Bashir was filled with great emotion and some teriffic exchanges of dialogue. Miles is the great imperfect "gentle soul".

Major Kira Nerys. Such a tough little thing, she reminds me so much of a dear friend who is gone. She epitomized the best of Bajor. Her strong religious convictions and complicated past, not to mention her various romantic entanglements, lent a great deal of complexity to a character that could have just rhymed with witch. Her relationship with Captain Sisko over the years, as well as others on the station, evolved over time as they got closer.

Or perhaps my favorite is Captain Benjamin Sisko. I read a review by a TV critic just a few shows into the first year, where he said Avery Brooks was a fine actor, but just walking through the part. NO NO He didn't get it at all. This was a man who has lost his beloved wife, his hope, his ambition. He is just walking through life. Off he goes into Deep Space with his son, to this little backwaters post...and adventures ensue. This show in its seven years was more of a roller coaster ride than any show I have ever followed. And it is because the characters are so rich.

Then there's Quark...

And how could I not say Worf???

Oh, dear.... there's lots more...

Lyn, so much to chew on... I totally agree. Kira is an archetypal character and Sisko undergoes such transformation that these characters epitomize what DS9 is all about. Personal development. I love this show!!!

Indeed Nerys is the one, and of course she is a fellow Bajoran which kinda seals it for me. Though i must say that when Lt (jg) Ezri Dax joined the crew my heart did a few flips :-)

Its so hard...this is by far one of the greatest tv shows of all time. There's really not a bad character in there....at least not in the way that some people dislike Neelix, or Geordi.

I love Garak. He's hardly underrated, but I think the performance from Andrew Robinson in a lesser actor would have never elevated this role to more than a bit player.

Secondly, Michael Dorn does up the ante when he comes back in Season 4. He's always a reliable contributor.

Finally Odo...with the Kira romance subplot, truly elevating this show to something very special.

Do I get one more....what the heck...Vic Fontaine...love the crooner!

Odo. I found the complexity of his character and the roads he took to get where he was of interest. A changling sent to the Alpha Quadrant to study, found his way to Terok Nor and served under the harsh Cardassian Union during the bloody occupation of Bajor. He found his way when Starfleet took the station over and found a way to fit in while still being an outcast. Odo was able to find out about where he came from, where he needed to end up, and his role in the history of the DS9 series. He got to be a friend, a father, a lover, an umpire and so much more.

I would have to say Odo. I know he could be a bit stiff, but to me, that was part of his charm. It was fun watching him try to be more human, especially in his attempts to woo Major Kira. My fave episode is the one where he goes into the holosuite to learn how to make Kira fall for him, and he is wearing a tux, playing piano, etc. Total riot to see him in that context. And of course, the end of that episode, where he plants one on Major Kira, was just sublime!

I would have to say Captain Benjamin Sisko
He is a great leader both in Star Fleet and as the Emissary to Bajor. He has learned how to make the tough decisions and stand for what he believes and he is humble about the power that his positions hold. He knows that he serves Federation and Bajorian people and doesn't let the power of his position over take his values.
I have to say that Cmdr. Worf his character is most like me. We were both adopted, we both wanting to know more about our history and our people and we both have a warrior's heart with human character added.
