Well, I'm glad to see that things have finally settled down and hopefully all those
spammers dealt with. I'm uncertain about a new Star Trek TV series because it might only dilute the momentum built up by J.J. Abrams' successful rebooting of the franchise. When Star Trek: the Next Generation was launched it got off to a dubious start and had it not been called Star Trek it would have been canceled after only one season. That doesn't mean it couldn't be done. The new web series STAR TREK: THE EARLY YEARS that is coming out next year offers a very intriguing premise based on the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike prior to the events in the new movie. Yes, that Christopher Pike. The Star Trek that might have been if Jeffery Hunter had stayed with the series in the lead role. It's even set in the same alternate universe seen in the movie so that offers some interesting story prospects set aboard a cool version of the USS Enterprise that is a predecessor to the one seen in the movie. There's a neat trailer of the new series that can be seen here on Trekspace in a group devoted to the series so check it out. It's two years to Star Trek 12 so lets get this party started!

Hey, I need some help here! Way back in the mid-sixties Leonard Nimoy made
an appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson as Spock! In full make-up and costume. He came out on stage, gave the Vulcan salute and recited some poetic verses or something, the audience cheered, and then he left. He didn't spend any time talking with Johnny. As far as I know it's the only time a Star Trek character has made an appearance on another show other than a Star Trek show. Patrick Stewart has been on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno a few times, but he was appearing as himself and not as Captain Picard. I am not making this up, and my memory isn't that faulty. It did happen! So if anyone else has seen this bit of video history please post it or let us know where we can see it! Thanks!

"There are other instances in a few of the movies: how about 20th Century Earth in Star Trek 4? Sure, that was a time when that was expected but it was still a movie and still product placement."

Exactly. Michelob, Apple, Pacific Bell Yellow Pages, all pretty well prominent.

As you alluded to, some will probably say "But.. but.. well, they HAD to use those cause it took place in 1986, ebudurr!." Well, not really. Even movies of their respective time avoid that with the use of generic names. There could have been Michelangelo Beer, Banana Computers, and Pacific Telephone White Pages. But they went the product placement way. It helps offset production costs.

In fact, it was even the wonderful Gene Almighty who was going to use a form of product placement in the original series that Nimoy refused to participate in.

"None of us have seen the future so we don't know Nokia doesn't manufacture computers, or communicators then, and we don't know Bud won't still have a following either!"

Exactly. Also, someone has to produce the goods that we would consume in the future. I mean, does Starfleet have a brewery of its own (well, I suppose Engibeering would count)? Doubt it. And would who have made McCoy's "Tennessee Whiskey?" There are only two companies I know of that make the stuff.

As DS9 showed us, entrepreneurship could strive even then, even if it's for money or not.

I hella' agree with that sentiment. Good post, Captain Pike.

I really liked Gene's philosophy. I think this was why he created Star Trek in the first place. :)

Regardless of if you love or hate the new Trek film, to personally attack others for their opinion goes against everything Star Trek stands for. If you do this, then you really aren't a true Trek fan. Below are the words from Gene Roddenberry.

You wanna know why I like the film???? It's because I've already worn out my DVDs of TOS, TAS, DS9, ENT, and VOY, along with the movies and stuff. It's new material. It breathes new life into established stuff...any time a movie comes out, whether it's new actors playing established characters, OR, an entirely new crew of a new ship, the original shows enjoy an upswing in interest as well as sales. So even if you don't like the movie, Star Trek enjoyed a new fanbase. My nine year old son wanted to know all about the original Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc. and really loves it. Leonard Nimoy....I loved his parting line and interaction with his new self that was something along the lines of, "my standard greeting will be self serving so I will simply say "good luck". Furthermore, I feel that some people get waaaaaay too worked up over this. It's a MOVIE. I must say Fizbin, that you're paying an awful alot of attention to this film to scrutinize it....I have people in the Johnny Depp fandom who will do the same thing and they are known as "closet fans". I liked the movie, and I really don't need to give a reason to justify why because I came from a time when it was uncool for girls to like sci-fi, or anyone to admit liking it without being labeled as a geek or nerd. Now I like it and feel camaraderie here among fans without being made fun of. And as I said in another thread regarding, product placement: Spock was wearing Nike shoes in Star Trek 5. There are other instances in a few of the movies: how about 20th Century Earth in Star Trek 4? Sure, that was a time when that was expected but it was still a movie and still product placement. By the way, I'm an actor's assistant. I've seen movies being made. They aren't exactly easy to make, write, produce, or plan. See all those hundreds of names in the credits??? Product placement defrays production costs, so those who don't want to pay $50 for a movie ticket can thank Nokia and Budweiser! None of us have seen the future so we don't know Nokia doesn't manufacture computers, or communicators then, and we don't know Bud won't still have a following either! The people who worked on the movie have to have a salary too....I'm not sure I agree with the choices of actors or like every aspect of it, but if one is open minded about it, it really does become an enjoyable story, and was not a bad movie...I think deep down there's something in it that you like!
