About Me:
I'm pretty much a lifelong Star Trek fan. I remember watching Star Trek in first run syndication as a kid. TOS is still my favorite, but I've always felt that the best writing in Star Trek was on DS9. I enjoy all the series. No matter what mood I'm in, there is a Star Trek to fit the mood. I think now, nore than ever, the world needs the message of Star Trek.

I love sci fi in general, especially the Dune Universe, and my other favorite television show, Doctor Who. The First Doctor is my favorite, followed by the Fifth. I'm also a comic book fan, and music fan. My tastes are very eclectic.

In my personal life, I am married to a wonderful wife, who is the joy of my life. I'm a progressive Christian, though much of how I understand my Christianity is filtered through my study of other faiths. I believe that love of every person and understanding can change the world.

Book Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Greater Than The Sum (Mostly Spoiler Free)

The thing with this type of media-tie in book is that such books tend to keep things status quo. There are very few deep messages and no character growth, just plot driven adventure.

That is what has made this run of Star Trek books particularly pleasing. There is growth, change, and loss. In Greater Than The Sum we have even more. There is a healthy dose of Eastern philosophy and religion in the book, particularly Hinduism and Buddhism. Though a Christian, I admire both these religions very mu… Continue

Book Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Before Dishonor (mild spoilers)

I've read Peter David's work for years. Whether it be Star Trek, comics, or other writings, he has always produced eminently enjoyable work, though as with any writer, some of it is better than others. He hit a home run with Before Dishonor.

Building on the past few novels, especially Resistance, David has created a suspenseful story of what happens when the Borg go beyond what they have ever been imagined to do. There is real sacrifice in the story, and the biggest battle with the Borg since W… Continue

Review Book #3: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Q&A (Minor Spoilers)

The next book in the Star Trek: TNG series is Q&A, written by Keith R.A. DeCandido and published in the fall of 2007 for the 20th anniversary of the series debut. As one might guess from the title, this book features Q, the omnipotent being from the very first episode of the series.

The book is well written and characterization is emphasized. Two new characters are introduced to the mix in order to fill positions left vacant by some departures. The first is Commander Miranda Kadohata, the n… Continue

Book Review: Star Trek: The Next Generation: Resistance (Minor Spoilers)

Resistance, by J.M. Dillard was released in September 2007 and really began the major push to reset the Star Trek universe in the 24th Century era. The stakes are considerably raised in this book, and a new Enterprise crew begins to take shape. This book changes things.

After the last novel, Death in Winter, Doctor Crusher has returned to the Enterprise and is living with Captain Picard. Commander Worf is acting first officer. There is also a new ship's counselor, T'Lana, a Vulcan. Needless to… Continue

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Death in Winter-A Review

My first book of 2009 is Star Trek: The Next Generation: Death in Winter by Michael Jan Friedman.

I'd decided to pick up the last few Next Generation books, once I'd found out that the 24th century Star Trek novels are being worked into a cohesive universe moving forward from the last movie, Nemesis . This one, originally published in 2005, is the first.

Friedman is no stranger to the franchise, having written Star Trek episodes, novel, and comics. He knows the character and writes them well.… Continue

Perspectives on new Star Trek from Doctor Who

I'm feeling optimistic about the new Star Trek movie. I know that everything will change due to this movie. Still, I can't help but feel that this will open up the franchise for the future. It will not be the Star Trek that I grew up with, but as long as the core is there, it will be Star Trek in my book. I'll likely not have the love for it that I have for the original, but that's okay. I do, however, understand those who reject the movie. The reason? Doctor Who.

I'… Continue

If you haven't already,I wholeheartedly reccomend Sone and Anvil simply because it details Calhoun's Academy days, during which you'll LOVE how he solves the kobayashi maru scenario! His solution is better than kirk's!

I got into Peter David through the New Frontier books actually.I still think they're fools not to do a Calhoun series. That character so completely rocks!

Hi Kirk! Nice to meet you! What a lovely profile you have! Interesting views you have on the coming Star Trek movie and the old and new Doctor Who. I was a Star Trek fan from the beginning, but only recently got into Who. So to me, before Eccleston and Tennant, there's nothing! LOL, except for Rowan Atkinson, of course! Ha!
